Daybreak began from Dagenham Parish Church in 1984 after three young men died as a result of drug abuse. The Revd Deryck Spratley, the minister who conducted their funerals, felt that God was calling him to do something about the situation. His persistence saw the first worker in post in July 1985.

Today, Daybreak continues Deryck's vision by offering professional addiction counselling, support and advice to people resident in the Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham and Havering. There are specialist programmes for Cocaine/Crack users, Women and Families, together with a structured Day Programme that operates throughout the week for people wishing to access rehabilitation in the community.
